Louis Pike on Leadership in Management Consulting

Q: Louis, your career has spanned several different disciplines. How has that shaped your approach to leadership on the one hand and consulting on the other?

I've been fortunate to experience a number of different environments throughout my career, each of which has helped shape the way I approach client challenges today.

I first entered the workplace in 2018, working directly under the CEO of a large local Builders merchant business. It was a short experience, but it exposed me to the commercial realities of running a business and gave me an early appreciation for leadership, decision-making and operational challenges.

In 2019, I moved into professional services for the first time and began my accounting and audit career with a local audit firm. From there, I joined a fund administrator, which provided valuable experience of financial services from an operational perspective and a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by regulated businesses.

In 2021, I transitioned into consulting with a ‘Big Four’ firm, which proved to be a pivotal point in my career. The role exposed me to business transformation, regulatory change, remediation programmes, technology-enabled delivery and strategic advisory work. It allowed me to combine my financial and operational background with broader business problem-solving and client advisory skills.

Alongside developing professionally, I was studying towards my ACCA qualification, which I completed in 2023. Balancing work, study and increasing responsibility helped build a strong technical foundation, but it also taught me resilience, adaptability and the importance of continuous learning.

Looking back, the biggest benefit wasn't any single role.

It was the exposure to different perspectives. That breadth of experience helps me understand the wider challenges clients face and allows me to bring a more practical perspective when supporting them.

Today, as a Manager within BDO Channel Islands Management Consulting practice, I lead complex client engagements across the Islands, working with boards, C-suite executives and senior stakeholders to help organisations navigate regulatory, operational and strategic challenges while delivering sustainable outcomes.

Q: A recent article we published highlighted the development of your colleague Sanjeev Kumar. How important is developing people within project delivery?

It's one of the most rewarding parts of the role, and Sanjeev's journey is a great example.

Sanjeev developed on an engagement that I was leading, where we deliberately created the opportunity for him to move beyond traditional audit work, build new technical skills in a compliance-focused environment and work directly with senior stakeholders.

My role was to mentor him throughout that programme, give him the space to stretch himself and make sure he had the support and feedback he needed to succeed.

He embraced the challenge, delivered consistently high-quality work and grew significantly in confidence. On the back of that performance and development, I was able to advocate for and help support his promotion, which was a genuinely proud moment for me. Seeing someone you've mentored take on greater responsibility and progress in their career is one of the clearest measures of success in this profession.

Professional services is ultimately a people business. Client outcomes matter enormously but delivering those outcomes while helping people grow is equally important. My own career has benefited from leaders who trusted me with responsibility before I felt completely ready and I think it's important to do the same for others.

Q: What does your role at BDO CI involve today?

The variety is one of the things I enjoy most.

I work across regulated businesses, utility businesses, operational readiness, governance enhancement, strategic transformation, operational enhancements and technology-enabled delivery programmes. Much of our work involves helping organisations address significant business challenges whilst remaining focused on practical, sustainable outcomes.

Most recently, I led a team of up to 13 professionals to deliver a large-scale file review programme for a major fiduciary and administration business. Delivering an engagement of that size and complexity, with a large team and within a condensed timeframe, was a significant challenge and a very steep learning curve.

Managing the pressures of a demanding client, supporting the team with day-to-day queries and balancing my own individual workload all at once was demanding, but ultimately extremely rewarding and one of the best experiences of my career to date.

Increasingly, I'm also spending more time leading multidisciplinary teams, managing senior stakeholder relationships and helping shape how we continue to grow our Management Consulting offering in the Channel Islands.

What excites me is that consulting today sits at the intersection of strategy, people and technology. Successful delivery isn't just about having the right technical answer. It's about bringing people with you through change, building trust and creating solutions that organisations can genuinely sustain.

Q: Outside of client work, you've become involved with several leadership and industry initiatives. Why is that important to you?

I've always believed that professional development extends beyond your day job.

In 2022, I was fortunate to win the inaugural Venture Challenge Young Entrepreneur Award, which reinforced the importance of innovation and commercial thinking.

More recently, in 2025 I became a lead within TEKEX, the largest professional business and innovation network across the Crown Dependencies and in 2026 I joined the Institute of Directors Emerging Leaders board.

Both roles provide the opportunity to engage with leaders from a wide range of industries and contribute to conversations around technology, leadership and the future of business in our islands. They make me a better consultant because they broaden my perspective and help me understand the opportunities and challenges facing organisations beyond any single sector.

Q: What are your ambitions for the future?

For me, success is about continuing to deliver meaningful outcomes for clients whilst helping build great teams around me.

The opportunities for management consulting in the Channel Islands continue to grow as organisations navigate increasing regulatory expectations, technological change and evolving stakeholder demands.

As I move towards more senior leadership, I want to continue leading significant client engagements, growing BDO CI's consulting capability and creating opportunities for others to build successful careers within the profession, just as Sanjeev has.

Ultimately, the most rewarding part of leadership is not what you achieve yourself, but the impact you have on the people and organisations around you.
