Interview with Thomas Mazarura

Thomas is an Assistant Manager in BDO Jersey’s Management Consulting Practice

Specialising in risk management, operational controls, and cybersecurity. Thomas delivers solutions in strategic planning, change management, technology enablement, and cybersecurity to help organisations navigate complexities and drive growth.

Q: Thomas, could you tell us a bit about your background and what brought you to BDO?

Thomas: I joined BDO three months ago after working at one of the Big 4 accounting firms, where I was solely involved in the risk side of advisory. I wanted to expand my horizons and move into more traditional consulting roles. BDO came at the right time and place for me, and the decision to join has truly transformed my outlook.

Q: How has your experience been since joining BDO in Jersey?

Thomas: From day one, I felt warmly welcomed and quickly became part of the team. What struck me immediately was how much BDO values teamwork and fresh perspectives. Everyone is encouraged to share their thoughts and collaborate. This is not just a diplomatic statement! It's what I have truly observed.

Q: What are the main differences you've noticed between your previous role and your current role at BDO?

Thomas: One of the biggest changes is the freedom to express myself. Unlike some of the rigid frameworks in audit, consulting at BDO allows me to approach client needs in my own way. I still rely on my experience in IT, audit, and cybersecurity, but now I get to be creative and deliver solutions that genuinely fit each client's needs. It's no longer about ticking boxes; it's about seeing the bigger picture and making a real difference.

Q: What excites you the most about BDO's consulting model?

Thomas: It’s the end-to-end approach that excites me the most. As management consultants, we advise our clients and work with a change management team to implement those changes. We also have the training and adoption team to train and upskill the client's employees, ensuring they adopt the new changes. Additionally, our technology team [through sister-business C5] ensures everything continues to run smoothly. We don't just hand over recommendations and walk away; we build lasting relationships and support our clients long-term.

Q: How would you describe the team dynamics at BDO?

Thomas: The management consulting team reminds me of termites (in the best way possible!). Like termites, we work quietly but efficiently together, digging deep, breaking down complex problems, and building strong solutions from the ground up. You might not always see us doing that, but in the background, we have an enormous impact.

Q: How has your past experience helped you in your current role?

Thomas: My past experience, especially in IT audit and cybersecurity, has been invaluable. The skills I developed, such as being organised, thinking critically, and approaching challenges methodically, have given me the confidence to tackle new projects and deliver results.

Q: What are your reflections on your journey so far at BDO?

Thomas: In just three months, I have grown more confident and discovered the power of combining technical expertise with creativity. I'm excited about the future and grateful for the experiences that brought me here. BDO has given me the chance to use my skills in new and rewarding ways. This transition has shown me the importance of being flexible, constantly learning, and not being afraid to try new things.
